The Coalition for an Independent and Transparent Judiciary welcomes timely completion of the process of election of a new Chief Justice.  Despite certain delays, the Parliament has still managed to complete the process according to the existing procedures and elected a new Chief Justice by 88 votes on March 20, 2018.  It also needs to be noted that for the first time in history, Georgia will have a female Chief Justice.  This is a step forward in increasing the role of women in deciding the issues of high importance.

GYLA Submitted four Coalition Reports in the UN

 GYLA jointly with partner organizations submitted four coalition reports in the UN. The report covers 2010-2014 period and encompasses the following topics:  1. Judiciary, law-enforcement and penitentiary systems;  2. Labor rights, cultural heritage;  3. Freedom of expression, media, information, personal data protection and freedom of assembly;    4. Healthcare.

NGOs condemn Physical Confrontations in Zugdidi and Batumi on Political Grounds

NGOs condemn recent physical confrontations and assaults on political grounds in Zugdidi and Batumi.    On March 15, supporters of the coalition Georgian Dream, Public Movement and other individuals held a protest march against the assembly scheduled to be held by the United National Movement on March 21 and urged them to stop meeting with constituents. The protest march eventually grew into violent actions.

CSOs concerned over screening to children of a violent film in four Samegrelo cities

On March 13-15 theatres and halls owned by Poti, Zugdidi, Senaki and Khobi municipalities held screenings of a documentary film - The Bloody Chronicle of the Saakashvili Regime. Screenings were organized by Gia Salukvadze. Saluvkvadze was released from prison as the Georgian Dream Government considered him a political prisoner. He is the head of All Generations for Georgia, a non-governmental organization. An exhibition was also held along with the screening, displaying photos from the film. The film shows and narrates stories of murder, people dying in suspicious circumstances, protest rallies dispersed using force by the police, unlawful imprisonments, video footage discovered in secret hideouts, and inhumane treatment, rape and torture of inmates in prisons during the United National Movement government. Local government representatives, local educational resource centers and the administration of local public schools were actively involved in organizing the events.

GYLA Applied to ECtHR for Ineffective Investigation of Facts of Ill-treatment Carried out Against Former Political Prisoners

GYLA Challenges in the Court Discriminative Normative Acts of the Government and the Ministry of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Accommodation and Refugees of Georgia

On March 13, 2015 GYLA, on behalf of one IDP applied to the Ministry of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Accommodation and Refugees of Georgia and requested partial invalidation of the normative acts which caused direct discrimination of a group of IDPs under the sign of citizenship.

GYLA calls on the Prosecutor’s Office to ensure timely and effective investigation of alleged facts of offence committed by the police

For the past several months some 20 individuals applied to GYLA and reported about unlawful and abusive conduct of police officers. Namely, some of GYLA’s beneficiaries allege that police officers have abused them verbally and physically in the course of arrest and after detention, while others report about police putting narcotics and firearms to them.

1. GYLA’s lawyers continue provision of legal aid to the victims of domestic violence With assistance from GYLA’s Tbilisi and Kutaisi offices the court issued protective order to the victims of domestic violence and in both cases the respondent was prohibited to have any relationship, including a phone contact, with an applicant.
