The State’s discriminatory policy in relation to abduction of girls should be amended

The Coalition for Equality responds to another fact disseminated through the media on the abduction of an underage girl for the marriage purposes in Kvemo Kartli and the alleged ineffective response of the Police to the above fact. [1] The Coalition believes that such incidents of violence are the result of the State’s discriminatory policy in relation to the crimes in which victims are women and girls. The State's failure to prevent, investigate and punish the violent acts against women violates the principle of equality as stipulated in the law and is discriminatory towards women. [2]

GYLA held a press conference on Irakli Khoperia's case

As various media outlets informed the public, on February 16, 2017 Irakli Khoperia allegedly was taken with no reason by police officers to the police station where he became a victim of police violence. According to Irakli Khoperia, he was demanded to acknowledge the offence which he had not committed, he was threatened to plant drugs on him and was physically abused. Later, after revealing that Irakli Khoperia had been arrested by mistake instead of another person, he was released. Under the medical examination, Irakli Khoperia was diagnosed with "head injury, [...] chest interfacial injury, with soft tissue bruise. Some injuries in the form of bruises have been detected on the body. Injuries have been inflicted with the repeated action of a solid blunt object."

Opinion about Constitutional Amendments Related to Marriage

The below signatory organizations are concerned by the initiative presented in the Constitutional Commission for definition of marriage in the Constitution. The proposed formulation carries homophobic connotation and can potentially foster negative sentiments towards LGBT people. Such amendments to the Constitution will have a chilling effect on the human rights situation in Georgia. If adopted, negative effects of these new regulations must be outweighed by legalization of civil partnership as a form of legal recognition of same-sex marriage.

Hearing about provision of compensation to victims of the natural disaster that occurred on June 13-14, 2015 will be held in Tbilisi Appellate Court today

Tbilisi City Court has fully granted the victim’s claim and has ordered the Property Management Agency of Tbilisi City Hall to sign an agreement with the plaintiffs for payment of compensation.
