GYLA – The court has delivered an unlawful, unfair and unsubstantiated verdict in the so-called “cable case”

The Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association (GYLA) responds to the judgment of conviction passed by Besik Bugianishvili, a judge of the Criminal Panel of the Tbilisi City Court, in the so-called “cable case” of detained high-ranking officials of the Ministry of Defense and believes that the verdict is unfair, unlawful, and unsubstantiated.

The Parliament adopts legislative amendments on Constitutional Court, which threaten democratic development of Georgia

The Coalition for an Independent and Transparent Judiciary is deeply concerned by the legislative amendments on Constitutional Court adopted by the Parliament.  The Coalition considers that the decision of the Parliament is directed not only against the current members of the Constitutional Court and/or specific judges, but these actions intend to paralyze the work of the Constitutional Court and diminish its important role thereby jeopardizing the fundamental values of modern democratic state such as the rule of law, recognition and protection of human rights, separation of powers and providing adequate, effective and impartial constitutional justice.

GYLA appeals to the Constitutional Court against discriminatory practices of funding the Muslim community from the State Budget

GYLA has appealed to the Constitutional Court on behalf of the Supreme Religious Administration of All Muslims of Georgia. The appellant appeals against the Ordinance of the Government of Georgia of 27 October 2014 on partial compensation for damages caused to the Muslim, Jewish, Armenian and Roman-Catholic communities during the Soviet Union.

Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association and Transparency International - Georgia presented High Council of Justice Monitoring Report #4. The report analyses the legislation and normative base and the activities of the Council on the selection/appointment of judges, transfer of judges, transparency of the work of the Council, disciplinary proceedings against judges, etc.

GYLA responds to pre-trial detention of Sulkhan Tsuladze

On April 15, 2016, Tbilisi City Court satisfied the motions of prosecutors of Prosecutorial Oversight Division of Investigation Unit of the Chief Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia regarding imposing pre-trial detention to Sulkhan Tsuladze, one of users of Tbilisi Forum. On April 20, 2016 Tbilisi Appeal Court upheld a ruling by the Tbilisi City Court on pre-trial detention.

GYLA responds to possible fact of selling of residential space to Judge of the Constitutional Court of Georgia for symbolic price

April 18, 2016, media reported that residential space in Batumi, Khimshiashvili street, with total 125 m², owned by Batumi Municipality, will be sold to Merab Turava, the Judge of the Constitutional Court of Georgia. According to the information, Batumi self-government will give the property of municipality to the State free of charge that will be sold to the Judge of the Constitutional Court for a symbolic price.

GYLA assesses the activities of the Government in terms of electoral reform
