Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association welcomes the abolition of N7 penitentiary facility. For many years several international and local organizations, as well as the Public Defender indicated that the conditions in the 7th facility have not met the minimum standards.

In the name of 3 convicts, in order to change the difficult conditions in the 7th facility GYLA also conducted a judicial dispute, which several months ago was successfully finished in three instances of the court.  Ministry of Corrections of Georgia was obliged to provide convicts to serve their sentence under appropriate conditions, in particular:

- Placing them in a cell that would have the window of the size and shape providing the cell with enough oxygen and day lighting;

- Placing them in the cell where artificial ventilation with natural ventilation would be provided;

- Placing them in a cell where the toilet would be isolated from the living space.

The court also determined that the facility should have drying room, medical station and yard for walk, location and size of which would ensure the penetration of air and sunshine required for the recreation of prisoners.

13 convicts were serving sentences in the 7th establishment in the last years.
