Coalition Reacts to Magda Papidze Case Hearings

The Coalition for an Independent and Transparent Judiciary believes that the defendant’s right to privacy was violated in the process of hearing Magda Papidze’s case in court. The Prosecution’s violation of the right to privacy was especially harsh. Additionally, the court hearings were conducted with numerous procedural violations. All of the above may adversely affect the fair hearing of the case.

The GYLA responds to legislative changes related to the jury system

The Parliament of Georgia is considering by the accelerated procedure the Draft Law of Georgia on Amendments to the Code of Criminal Procedure of Georgia, which was initiated by the Government of Georgia. The draft law aims at eliminating deficiencies revealed in the functioning of juries in Georgia and bringing the legislation that regulates the said institution in line with international standards.

The GYLA responds to addition of new election-related article to the Criminal Code

The Parliament of Georgia has initiated a package of amendments to be made to the Criminal Code of Georgia and other related legislative acts. The amendments envisage adding a special election-related article to the Criminal Code and changing the regulations on calling law enforcement officers to an election precinct (the adjacent area) and on their presence there.

Attempt to reform the electoral system has failed yet again

Media has reported that the draft law on modified German model of the electoral system has been removed from the parliamentary hearing agenda after it was withdrawn by its initiator - the Republican Party. According to a member of the party, Levan Berdzenishvili the bill was withdrawn because it did not receive enough votes.

On June 1 this year, news outlets disseminated a statement about Natia Gujabidze, the judge considering the case of Rustavi 2, according to which her expenses for renting an apartment had been paid from the state budget, whereas the judge was renting the apartment from her family member.

Political parties should take electoral system change more seriously

On June 1, the parliamentary committee for legal issues debated a bill for electoral system change and put it to vote during the first reading. The bill aims to replace the existing electoral system with a modified version of the so-called German model. The bill provides an opportunity to implement meaningful changes for improving the electoral system ahead of the 2016 election
