GYLA Voices its Position about the Death of a Prisoner in Penitentiary #8

Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association  expresses deep sorrow for the death of a prisoner in Gldani #8 penitentiary and calls on the government for rapid, impartial and thorough investigation of the case.  As reported, D.T. born in 1980, allegedly committed suicide in the toilet where he was found by his inmates. He has been placed with 6 inmates in a cell. Further, as the relatives of the deceased state, the fatal accident took place after the prisoner met the investigator. The case has been initiated as per Article 115 of the Criminal Code.

Successfully Litigated Cases in June

 With GYLA’s Assistance Six Individuals Won a Labor Dispute to Casino “Ajara” GYLA’s Tbilisi office protected interests of six individuals, whose labor contracts were unreasonably terminated by Casino “Ajara”. The court found their dismissal illegal and Casino “Ajara” became obliged to compensate 68 120 laris in favor of applicants.

The Central Election Commission and GYLA signed a Memorandum of Cooperation

 On July 6, 2015 the Central Election Commission(CEC) and Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association(GYLA) signed a Memorandum of Cooperation in the framework of “Electoral Education Schools 2015” project with a view to promote public awareness and election culture.

GYLA is Summarizing the Results of its Work, Aiming at Protection of IDP Rights in the Past Three Years (2012-2015)

 On June 30, 2015 GYLA finalized the project it has been implementing since May 1, 2012.  The project aimed at providing legal aid to Internally Displaced Persons. The project was financed by the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida) and implemented by the Danish Refugee Council (DRC).

Presentation of the Monitoring Report of the High Council of Justice

Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association and Transparency International - Georgia presented Three-Year Summary of Monitoring the High Council of Justice in the period of 2012-2014. The report summarizes the activities of the Council on the selection/appointment of judges, transfer of judges, transparency of the work of the Council, disciplinary proceedings against judges, etc.

“The Electoral Development Schools 2015” – Pilot Project for Youth

The Central Election Commission of Georgia in cooperation with the Georgian Young Lawyers' Association (GYLA)  launches a pilot project “Electoral Development Schools 2015”. 17-25 years old youth will have an opportunity to undergo the learning course and obtain knowledge on electoral issues during July 13 - 24.

GYLA Calls Upon the State to Ensure Safety of the Journalists and Effective Investigation

The Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association (GYLA) is responding to the information, publicized by the Kakheti Information Center, relating to the facts of pressure upon the media representatives. The June 23, 2015 article “The Journalists are Threatened to be Killed because of Publicizing the Caricatures” says that the journalists are being threatened.

GYLA Presented Trial Monitoring Results

The Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association presented the results of its monitoring of criminal cases in Batumi, Kutaisi and Tbilisi City Courts and Tbilisi and Kutaisi Appeals Courts on June 22, 2015.  Danielle Reiff, Head of USAID’s Democracy and Governance Office, and Anna Natsvlishvili, Chair of Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association opened the presentation. The court monitoring conducted by the GYLA is funded by the USAID through the Promoting Rule of Law in Georgia (PROLoG) Activity implemented by the East-West Management Institute (EWMI).
