Statement of Non-Governmental Organisations on the Cycle of TV Programmes Broadcasted by the TV Company GDS

The cycle of TV programmes started on the GDS TV in September, in which the former Prime Minister of Georgia and Bidzina Ivanishvili, the founder of the political coalition Georgian Dream, meet live the local journalists from all ten regions. GYLA MAKES AN EVALUATION OF THE INVESTIGATION OF AN INCIDENT OCCURRED BETWEEN THE CHAIRPERSON OF THE TBILISI CITY COURT AND THE HEAD OF ONE OF THE NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANISATIONS

The ongoing investigation of an incident occurred in Gonio on 26 August 2016 between the Chairperson of the Tbilisi City Court and Tamar Khachapuridze, the head of one of the non-governmental organisations - “Hope for the Future” - calls into question that the investigation of the incident involving a high official may be conducted in an impartial and objective manner. The accuracy of the qualification of the action committed, the proportionality of expected punishment, the independence and objectiveness of judicial control over the investigation process are in question.

GYLA RESPONDS TO THE FACT OF IMPEDIMENT BY THE POLICE TO PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES OF JOURNALIST DAVIT MCHEDLIDZE THROUGH COERCION

GYLA responds to the fact of impediment by the police to professional activities of journalist Davit Mchedlidze.  Any cases of impediment to professional activities of journalists, irrespective of whether such impediments contain the signs of crime or not, are inadmissible in a democratic society. A particular threat is contained in the coercion towards journalists to prevent them from disseminating information on the operation of state agencies or on other important issues, especially if such coercion is coming from the representatives of law enforcement bodies. According to the criminal legislation of Georgia, such action constitutes a crime.

The Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association continues the monitoring of the election campaigns for the Georgian Parliament electiond to be held on 8 October 2016. This time we would like to focus the attention of the public on the incidents occurred in two cities of Georgia, Batumi and Telavi, on 4 August, and call on the the parties involved in the electoral processes to be more responsible, to duly fulfil the obligations assigned to them under the legislation of Georgia and to contribute to the conduct of elections in a peaceful, stable and conductive environment.
