The court issues a judgment of conviction on the violence on the ground of sexual orientation

GYLA was protecting the interests of the injured, who was a victim of violence committed by a family member (brother) due to sexual orientation. The victim was systematically humiliated, verbally and physically abused by the violator because of sexual orientation, as a result, the injured was forced to change the place of residence.

On October 29, 2019, the Khelvachauri District Court issued a judgment on this case and found the violator guilty in committing the crime (domestic violence) envisaged by Part 1 of Article 1261 of the Criminal Code. The court also applied Article 531 of the Criminal Code and found the crime committed on the ground of sexual orientation as an aggravating circumstance of liability. The Kutaisi Court of Appeal also upheld the judgment.
