GYLA’s statement about signing of EU Association Agreement

Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association congratulates Georgia on signing the EU Association Agreement. It is the most important event in the history of our country, which is recognition of the real progress attained by Georgia on the way to institutional development and rule of law democracy after restoration of its independence. At the same time, the Association Agreement imposes great responsibility on us to assess mistakes, reinforce attained outcomes and carry out further steps for dealing with current challenges, including establishment of rule of law and protection of human rights.

For the past 20 years, GYLA was involved actively in promotion of democracy process and in establishment and strengthening of human rights protection and respect. The contribution provided by EU and its member states to the civil society was a key pre-requisite of achieved results and our involvement in the process.

We hope, that after signing the Association Agreement cooperation between EU and civil sector, as well as with civil sector and state authorities will become more intense in a manner that to deal jointly with encountered challenges and to protect values that are cornerstone of the modern European idea. These are –human dignity, freedom, equality before the law and peaceful cohabitation of different nations.

We congratulate Georgia on this vital success.
