GYLA calls on the Prosecutor’s Office to ensure conduct of comprehensive, effective and impartial investigation on Philip Babayan and Arthur Oganezian’s cases

Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association calls on the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia to conduct immediate and impartial investigation on video materials released by TV company Rustavi 2 on July 2, 2015 illustrating alleged fact of ill-treatment committed against Phylip Babayan and Arthur Ohanezian in Police Department of Dzveli Tbilisi.

As reported, only Philip Babayan and Arthur Oganezian were charged on the case, while policemen were granted victim status, which raises doubts about conduct of investigation in a biased and  subjective manner.

Failure of the state to investigate foregoing facts effectively and impartially will undermine public trust to the key state institutions and will question state policy in terms of combating torture and ill-treatment.

Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association calls on the General Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia to ensure comprehensive, effective and impartial investigation on the case and to study alleged hate motive under the the ethnic ground in the commied offence.
